It’s definitely Blue Monday for the Artifact news app, which is going to be shutting down by the end of February. It was just one year ago that Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched the app, which offers personalized news powered by AI. But now they say the “market opportunity isn’t big enough to warrant continued investment in this way.” A for effort, Artifact. 🫡

Good housekeeping
This is the annual Social Media Housekeeping Issue of The Social Platypus. Some of these tasks are more fun than others, but checking all of them off your to-do list now will make your 2024 a lot easier.
How many of these can you check off your list this January?!
1/6 Update Passwords
It’s a good idea to update passwords at least once a year. At a minimum, your passwords should include symbols, and both uppercase and lowercase letters. I also strongly suggest using multi-factor authentication, particularly if you have verified accounts, which can be a target for hackers.
2/6 Review Admin Access
Did any staff members leave your organization in the last year? If so, did you remove those team members from admin access on your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts? Or perhaps there is someone from an agency that you granted access to for a campaign that is now complete? Give your admin access a quick check to make sure there isn’t anyone in there that shouldn’t be.
3/6 Update Your Editorial Calendar for 2024
Many important holidays and dates don’t change from year to year, but there are a few that shift (for example, Blue Monday is the third Monday in January). So just make sure to review your calendar to check for shifting dates. This is also a good time to consider whether there are some new dates you’d like to add to your calendar.
4/6 Run 2023 Year-End Reports
Whether you monitor your metrics on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, it's always a good idea to take a 12-month view of your progress to see how well your efforts performed against your strategy. Look for year-over-year results in areas that relate to your goals. And include both quantitative (i.e. followers) and qualitative (i.e. comments) data. It's not just about "how much" you grew your account, but "who" and "how" others engaged positively with you.
5/6 Update Your Website Footer
And if you have a website where the footer isn't automatically updated to the new year, you'll want to manually change that to 2024 so your site doesn't look out of date.
6/6 Review Your Goals and Strategy
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Have the goals of your business/organization changed?
Do your social media goals still reflect the goals of your business/organization?
Is your branding consistent across all platforms?
Do you want to add any new platforms? How will this support your strategy, and do you have the resources to do this?
Happy Social Media Housekeeping!

The online platforms teens love…
YouTube is the top online platform choice of U.S. teens, according to the Pew Research Center. TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram are also popular picks. However, interest in Facebook is on the decline for this demographic.
According to this research, “About seven-in-ten U.S. teens say they visit YouTube every day – including 16% who do so almost constantly. TikTok follows with 58% who say they visit it daily.”

📚 #LibraryTok
Hearing the word “influencer” might not automatically make you think of librarians. But there are a few folks on TikTok who are going viral for sharing their love of libraries, books, and stories.
“Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card.” That’s the TikTok bio for a librarian in California called Mychal, who seems like one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He shares stories of the people who visit his library, and genuinely seems to love what he does. The New York Times recently profiled Mychal and how he is sharing his ‘library joy’ on social media.
And then there is Storybook Maze, who describes herself as a “Radical Street Librarian.” I first came across this account based on this video (which I love). We all need a librarian like this in our lives, amirite?
